Masopust / Carnival

Today, I invite you with my photographs to the carnival festivity to Roztoky.
Dnes vás svými fotografiemi pozvu na masopustní veselí do Roztok.

Carnival tradition is the dividing line between Christmas and Easter, and played an important role at the break of two seasons, when farmers were completing chores from the previous season while getting ready for the upcoming spring, that related to a series of symbolic acts and beliefs having to ensure fertility and protect the farms.

Although it is not a religious holiday, it is included in the church calendar, because its term is governed by Easter. Main celebrations used to be three days before Ash Wednesday - Fat Thursday, the dance Sunday (49 days before Easter Sunday) and Lent Tuesday (47 days before Easter Sunday). Today, the carnival celebrations shifted primarily to weekends.

The carnival parade must always include some typical masks. Among the oldest of these is the bear. Every farmer´s rife had to dance with the bear and leap high to make her flax or hemp grow tall. At the same time they tried to pick up the bit of bears clothing to give to their poultry for good sitting on eggs.

The parade is led by a group of Sweepers, who make the space as necessary.
Čelo průvodu vede skupina Vometaček, které dělají průvodu prostor.

Klibna or horse is another typical mask that must be at the parade.
