Noc kostelů / Night of the churches

This weekend brought several interesting cultural events and so I would like to share some photos with you and show you some new places of Prague. On Friday there was a Night of Churches, on Saturday Museum night and as it was not enough already also a weekend of open gardens.

Let´s start with the Night of Churches. This project, which is taking place throughout Europe, has several aims. It offers the possibility of meeting with Christianity without any commitments, offered in a light atmosphere of positive experience with the help of talks, concerts, exhibitions and unusual experiences. It is an event that wants to reach the widest possible audience and present churches as an important part of social life and cultural heritage.

I wanted to visit a place that would be near my home and chose the Church at Karlinské náměstí. It is beautiful, I used to work in the nearby building and I often walk around to the market. You can see the whole church in the winter coat in this post.

Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is one of the largest religious buildings in the Czech Republic. It was constructed in the mid-19th century and remains one of the most important architectural landmarks from that period in the country. The church is built in the style of late Romanesque basilica with severely canted nave and two towers.

First I climbed 62 steps to the balcony and the organ player showed us the perks of his job.

Then I waited to climb another 270+ steps to one of the towers. Even though they were trying to keep the spaces between groups, the tower got crowded soon. At the top we heard some information about the bells and then the most interesting part happened. We needed to walk through the church loft to the other tower to walk down. I found it fascinating to see the stone arches from the other side. The photos are not good as there was no light and little time to play around, but the experience and space was so interesting that I could not resist and take some.

Nahoře jsme dostali informace o zvonech a pak přišlo to nejzajímavější.

During the evening there was also a little concert, but I missed that as I was in the tower at that time.
You can see all photos from Friday night here.
