About wool / O vlně

(čeština níže)

Today I would like to introduce you the wonderful material my felted garmentsand accessories are made of sheep wool / fleece. Sheep wool has a unique combination of functional properties that bring a great comfort to its users every day. This special combination of useful features has undergone millions of years of evolution to protect its animal wearer and even to human body it is the most favorable of all known textile fibres.

Wool is 100% natural and sustainable material. As long as the grass will grow, the sheep will produce new fleece.

Wool is biodegradable, it can be returned into the soil and it still releases valuable nutrients. No waste at all.

Wool is safe. It is not known that wool would cause any allergies, it does not support the growth of bacteria and the lanolin content eliminates the conditions for the occurrence of mites.

Due to its high water and nitrogen content the wool slows down burning process and has much higher threshold to catch the flame than other fibres. It will not melt and stick to the skin when burning and produces less harmful emissions that cause death during fire.

Wool has naturally high level of protection against UV rays, much higher than most synthetic fibres or cotton.

Wool is very durable because of its flexibility and resilience. The fiber can be bent more than 20.000x without breaking.

Wool is hygroscopic - due to its cellular structure it has the ability to absorb and retain therein a large amount of water. It can absorb 50% of its weight and will continue to feel dry at the touch. Once the surrounding environment is no longer wet it will easily evaporate the gained moisture. With this feature it is perfect to absorbs sweat and evaporate it into the surrounding environment. When moisture evaporates the wool releases heat. So even wet wool keeps you warm. That may be great property while building a snowman and having wet gloves.

Wool has great thermal properties. Its surface is made up of thousands of flakes which overlap like roof tiles, creating an impenetrable insulating layer. Due to the porous structure and curliness it can keep air inside the layers that also helps to maintain a constant temperature. Due to its flexibility garments made of wool fibre do not adhere tightly to human skin on its entire surface, which create yet another layer of insulating air. Wool will keep just the right amount of heat your body needs at the given moment. It means it will keep you warm in the winter and flexibly compensate the difference in the temperature and cools you down in the summer.

Wool has properties that may positively affect human health, as demonstrated by numerous studies and observations. For many years wool has been successfully used in medical rehabilitation processes, especially for traumatic and rheumatic conditions or joint pains. Wool has proven beneficial effect on sleep and overall relaxation of the body.

Wool contains a large amount of lanolin (a natural animal fat) that protects fibres against dirt. Any dirt that gets into the fibre is pushed to the surface. Same as on living sheep, the dirt accumulates only on the surface, while inside remains clean fleece. Wool is basically self-cleaning and wool products do not need to be washed frequently. Lanolin, as a byproduct of wool, is widely used in cosmetics, pharmacology and medicine as well as in textile and leather industries.

And finally let´s not forget one of the most important characteristics of wool – its ability to felt. The little flakes that make a wool fibre surface are closely connected by friction and produce very thick and cohesive material.

Vlna díky vysokému obsahu vody a obsahu dusíku zpomaluje hoření a má mnohem vyšší práh zapalitelnosti než jiná vlákna.

Díky této vlastnosti skvěle pohlcuje pot a vypařuje ho do okolí.

V zimě zahřívá, v létě pružně vyrovnává teplotní rozdíl a chladí.

Vlna má vlastnosti, které mohou kladně ovlivnit lidské zdraví, jak prokazují mnohé výzkumy a pozorování. Už mnoho let se úspěšně používá v procesech léčebné rehabilitace, zejména poúrazových a revmatických stavů, bolestech kloubů. Vlna příznivě ovlivňuje spánek a celkovou relaxaci těla.

No a nakonec nesmíme zapomenout na jednu z nejdůležitějších vlastností vlny: schopnost zplstnatět. Šupinky, z nichž se skládá vlněné vlákno, se třením navzájem těsně spojí, takže z nich vznikne hustá a soudržná látka.

  3. Wool is magic it seems :) Yes I love the felting side of it and the fact that is grows on sheep instead of the much water required cotton plants!

  6. Wool has a great presence in our traditional clothes and home decoration. I still have wool blankets, wool carpets and of course wool clothes- all made by my grandmothers. But... wool do gives allergies even tough it's a natural material and cleaning the wool requires a lot of water and man work (in order to do it the eco way and not with detergent harsh that harms the environment). So the best way would be to wash it manually in a river with handmade eco soap...

  7. Well, I am allergic to lanolin...so I am not the biggest fan of wool. Also, as with any mass produce items, sheeps are so often abused. Won't go into graphic details as there are plenty of info on the internet.
